To get the fantasy and reality stirred like the milk and sugar in our coffee. I have been encouraged to use life situations in my writing at workshops.
Isn’t this exciting? Often as a writer we can truly get caught up in our story and our own dreams of a situation similar to our hero/heroine. Isn’t it a wonderful place to be?
You look at a scene of a boat on a flat lake with the water glistening on the ripples and immediately get caught up in the romance of the situation, and wrap a story about the moment immediately.
You can smell the perfumes in the air that drift by. Get intoxicated by your hero’s aftershave. Hear the creaking of the wooden boat as the oars rub against it. Hear the splash as the oar gently enters the water and your hero smiles at you. Your heart glides along with them.
The magic continues as you become more involved in the fantasy scene as if you were there. You feel every word as it is written on the paper or appears on the scene. Isn’t magic being a romance writer in such escapism?
You have your heroine in expensive dresses and highlighted by the most exquisite jewellery. You dance as light as a feather in his arms with all eyes on you as you hear the beat of the music imagined as you read the story of Cinderella when young. Is this a reality wish or dream coming through into the story.
Romance writing is happy writing to everyone who loves recording a detail about an inner dream situation. Genuinely feeling the agony of the conflict, that sets upon your protagonist as if the tears are truly yours when they part. You are always beside them, feeling for them as they are written back together. They are united through their heart to the end of the story for a HEA in the final chapter. This may be just as you may truly wish in the reality of your own story.
‘Happy Ever Afters’ to everyone who writes Romance. We know deep down that everyone suffers a little of the invisible Oneirataxia. It’s such a gift to truly find it in your story and such an asset to use when you realise you are not too far away from the mixture of fantasy and reality.
Don’t give up, keep mixing the tales. Fight on to get through the block, file all the doubts away and just keep going on the wonderful romance of writing.
